Transcend Announces 192GB High-Speed SSD

The Taiwan-based international high-tech company, Transcend, recently presented its brand new 192GB high-speed 2.5-inch Solid State Drive (SSD).

With a powerful new controller, the company's MLC-equipped 192GB SSD registers far better abilities than the common 2.5-inch hard drives, being able to bring outstanding continuous read/write speeds of up to 150MB / 90MB per second, which makes it possible to safely transfer files of any size.

Featuring such incredible data transfer speeds, the computer outfitted with Transcend's SSD boots-up faster. Besides the device makes it possible for games to run without any issues and in general improves the reaction of the system.

In addition to improving the responsiveness of the system, the high-capacity 192GB Solid State Drive developed by Transcend is both silent and power-efficient, which makes it a perfect upgrade for any notebook computer.

The SSD also includes incorporated ECC (Error Correction Code) which ensures accuracy of data transfer and a built-in wear leveling technology which promises high-durability storage and long-term consistency.

Vodafone and 3 flag “economies of scale” from merger

Jobs at two of Australia’s major mobile telcos are on the line after Vodafone and Hutchison 3 said they will form a joint venture through a merger.

The carriers today unveiled plans to merge their telecommunications businesses to create a company called VHA Australia.

VHA will market its products and services under the Vodafone brand but retain exclusive rights to use the 3 brand in Australia "during a transition period and thereafter", the companies said in a statement.

The VHA network will cover "at least" 95 percent of the population, they said.

About 63 percent of people will have access to 3G services immediately but additional network rollouts will take that figure up to 95 percent. No guidance on timelines was provided.

Malware creeps into LinkedIn

A rash of fake profiles on business networking site LinkedIn could put users in danger of malware infection.

Researchers at McAfee said that several hundred phoney profile pages on the service are tempting users with the promise of nude photos of celebrities.

When the user clicks on one of the links, they are taken to an external site which attempts to launch an iFrame browser exploit and then redirects the user to other potentially harmful sites.

"When an unsuspecting user follows the lure, he will end up on different malicious web sites trying the classic social engineering tricks of the 'missing video codec' or a fake anti-virus scan telling the user his computer is infected with malware and offering 'free' scanning software, which in fact is the real threat," wrote McAfee researcher Micha Pekrul in a blog post.

"So beware when following links, even on trusted Web 2.0 platforms like LinkedIn."

Nokia N96

Despite the griping of the anti-Apple brigade, there’s going to be only one phone on the minds of the gadget obsessed – the iPhone. Although there are better business phones around, notably the A-Listed Nokia E71 and the RIM BlackBerry Bold, none has been able to match its all-round consumer appeal.

The N96 aims to change all that. Nokia’s flagship multimedia phone is packed full of features. Not content with cramming in all of the top-end hardware you could want, from fast HSDPA mobile data and 802.11bg Wi-Fi, to GPS, a 5-megapixel camera with dual xenon flash and 16GB of storage.

With the launch of the N96, Nokia has also teamed up with the BBC to offer a free, full season of a selected TV series to watch on the device. You can’t download over HSDPA, but over Wi-Fi programmes take a matter of minutes to land in the gallery.

The N96’s 2.9in 240 x 320 display can’t match the iPhone’s 3.5in 480 x 320 touchscreen, but it’s bright and colourful enough to enjoy video on, and we liked the kickstand on the rear – a real boon for watching longer programmes or movies. There’s more to come from the N96 on the video front.

HP Mini 1001TU

The HP Mini 2133 was one of the most stylish not-quite-netbooks we saw last year. It was one of the few that looked like a real notebook, but at the time we bemoaned the inclusion of Vista.

So it’s pleasing to note that the new Mini includes XP Home as the installed operating system. Microsoft’s XP licensing deal means that as a result the RAM in the Mini 1001TU is reduced to 1GB, rather than the 2133’s 2GB, but XP with 1GB performs better than Vista with 2GB, as our recent RAM performance tests showed.

While we benchmark all the netbooks and notebooks that come through our labs, we’ve found amazing consistency for the Atom N270 processor. Even so, the HP Mini rates on the higher side of performance.

It’s score of 0.41 is better than the other nbetbooks we’ve seen bearing this processor – The Eee PC 901 scored .39, for example, and the Wind 0.38. But it’s not in performance that the HP Mini stands out.

Instead, it’s style and usability where HP has focused its efforts. The lid has a silver spiraling pattern across the piano black surface, making it the most attractive netbook we’ve seen.

Toshiba Portégé M800

Thanks to its gleaming white gloss finish, it’s difficult to ignore Toshiba’s Portégé M800. With accentuated curves and a chassis clad in white pinstripes, it has the potential to look horribly tacky.

It doesn’t, though, and this exterior conceals a particularly well-constructed laptop. The lid is just a touch too pliant, but the flex-free base makes up for it.

The build quality doesn’t come at the expense of heft either; at 2.09kg, the Toshiba is far from lightweight, but it’s still easily slung in a bag when required.

Is Google's Eric Schmidt the next David Geffen?

For several years, YouTube has been a disruptive force in film and television. Now music poobahs are wondering what designs Google may have on their businesses. Three of the four largest recording companies are in talks to renegotiate music-licensing deals with Google's YouTube. Sony Music is very near to inking a YouTube agreement, say my industry sources. Meanwhile, YouTube has reportedly started to generate "tens of millions" for some of the labels.

At the same time, the music store Amazon.com created on Android, Google's mobile-phone operating system, is leading to big music sales. Google declined to provide numbers or to comment for this story, but my sources say that the labels are "very happy" with Android's songs sales. In addition, Google could one day tap into a huge market by helping people discover and buy music using search, according to Susan Kevorkian, an analyst with research firm IDC.

Microsoft and EMC renew their vows

NEW YORK--It was a lovefest Tuesday here at the Plaza Hotel where Microsoft and storage company EMC announced that they are extending their strategic partnership another three years.

The software giant and information management company have been working closely together for years, but they didn't formalize their relationship until 2006. Now things are going so well for the companies, they've decided to extend the formal relationship. As part of the extended partnership, the companies say they'll be focusing more on storage and virtualized environments. They'll also concentrate on productivity and security solutions to prevent data breaches.

We caught up with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and EMC CEO Joe Tucci here at an event they hosted for their enterprise customers where the two executives talked about balancing their cooperative and sometimes competitive relationship. They also discussed how the current economic environment is affecting how their large corporate customers are spending money, and how they hope their continued partnership will help them each drive more business.
